Bias disclosure. We make OpenClaw Easy, so this comparison is not neutral. We have tried to keep it factual: every Claude Desktop feature, price and limitation here is from Anthropic's Claude Desktop download page, official pricing page and the in-product feature set as of May 2026. Where Claude Desktop is the better fit, we say so. If anything below is out of date, please email us.

Quick disambiguation up front. "OpenClaw Easy" and "Claude Desktop" sound similar but they are entirely different products from different companies. Anthropic makes Claude (the AI model) and Claude Desktop (their official Mac and Windows app for chatting with Claude). OpenClaw Easy is an unaffiliated open-source project that runs any AI provider — Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, local models — inside messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack and Discord.

They overlap in being "AI desktop apps" and they both can run Claude. They differ on almost everything else. This page exists because people sometimes confuse the two product names; the comparison below makes clear which one solves which problem.

The 30-second answer

  • Pick OpenClaw Easy if you want Claude (or ChatGPT, or Gemini, or a local model) inside WhatsApp / Telegram / Slack / Discord / Feishu / Line — with cron jobs, agents, and channel-aware automation.
  • Pick Claude Desktop if you want Anthropic's polished chat interface for Claude on your Mac or Windows desktop — with Projects, Artifacts, Computer Use, file uploads, and the official Anthropic experience.

Best for Putting AI in your existing chat apps Chatting with Claude in Anthropic's UI on your desktop

Are these two products competitors?

Not really — they are complementary tools that share a "desktop app for AI" umbrella. Claude Desktop is Anthropic's flagship UI for talking to their own model. OpenClaw Easy is a routing layer that takes messages from your chat apps, sends them to whatever AI provider you point it at (including Claude), and sends the response back into the chat.

You can absolutely use both. Claude Desktop for deep, single-task work where you want Projects and Artifacts and Computer Use. OpenClaw Easy for AI inside WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack and Discord — for asking quick questions, drafting messages, summarizing channels, scheduling cron jobs.

Pricing — what you actually pay

OpenClaw Easy is free to download and free to run. You pay only your AI provider's per-token API costs (or $0 if you use a local model via Ollama). For Claude API access, see Anthropic's API pricing.

Claude Desktop is included with any Claude account: free tier, $20/month Pro, $100/month Max, or $25+/month per-seat for Team and Enterprise. The desktop app is functionally tied to your subscription tier — Computer Use, Projects, and the largest context windows live on paid plans.

The interesting comparison: a Pro Claude account ($20/month) gives you Claude inside Anthropic's UI. The same money in API credits gets you Claude inside WhatsApp, Telegram and Slack via OpenClaw Easy, plus the ability to swap to GPT-4o or Gemini for the same conversation.

AI model choice — locked to Claude vs open

Claude Desktop is locked to Anthropic's models — that is the whole point. You get whatever Anthropic ships next: Claude 4 Opus, Claude 4.5 Sonnet, Claude 5 when it ships. The product is a vertical experience around one model family.

OpenClaw Easy is provider-agnostic. You can use Claude (via Anthropic's API), GPT-4o (via OpenAI), Gemini (via Google), DeepSeek, or local Llama / Qwen / Mistral models via Ollama. If a new flagship lands at any lab, you can usually try it the same day. Different models can even be assigned to different channels — Claude on Slack for work, Gemini on WhatsApp for casual.

Channels — single surface vs six surfaces

Claude Desktop is one chat window. You go to it, you type, Claude responds. That is the entire surface. It does not connect to WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack or Discord.

OpenClaw Easy supports six messaging surfaces from the same app: WhatsApp (QR-pair), Telegram (bot token), Slack (OAuth), Discord (invite link), Feishu and Line. Same agent configuration, same memory, same skills shared across channels. Useful when "where AI lives" is "wherever the conversation happens to be."

Privacy and where data lives

OpenClaw Easy: runtime on your machine. With a hosted provider (including Anthropic), data goes only to that provider. With local Ollama, messages stay on the device.

Claude Desktop: runs locally as the UI, but all messages route through Anthropic's servers (the model is hosted). Anthropic does not train on data from paid Claude API usage by default and offers no-training opt-out for consumer plans. Both are reasonable privacy postures; OpenClaw Easy is the only one that lets you process messages entirely on-device with a local model.

Claude Desktop features OpenClaw Easy does not replicate

Projects — long-running workspaces with uploaded knowledge files; OpenClaw Easy has per-agent system prompts and skills but not Anthropic's exact Projects UX.

Artifacts — interactive code/UI panes that render alongside the chat. OpenClaw Easy does not have a comparable inline-render surface.

Computer Use — Claude Desktop on Pro/Max can take screenshots and control the desktop. OpenClaw Easy uses channel-driven automation (cron jobs, skills, message-triggered actions) — different paradigm.

If those features are the reason you are paying for Claude Pro, Claude Desktop stays the right tool. OpenClaw Easy is the right tool when you want Claude inside chat apps you already live in.

When Claude Desktop is the better choice

Claude Desktop wins clearly in these cases:

  • You want Anthropic's polished UI for Claude with Projects, Artifacts and Computer Use.
  • You only ever want to use Claude, never another model.
  • You do most of your AI work in focused single-task sessions rather than across messaging conversations.
  • You want the official Anthropic experience and are happy paying $20–100/month for it.
  • You want Computer Use to automate desktop tasks via Claude.

When OpenClaw Easy is the better choice

OpenClaw Easy wins clearly in these cases:

  • You want Claude (or ChatGPT, or Gemini) inside WhatsApp / Telegram / Slack / Discord.
  • You want to switch between AI providers for different tasks or different channels.
  • You want cron jobs and skills on top of the AI — scheduled summaries, automated workflows.
  • You want to run a local model via Ollama and keep messages on-device.
  • You want it open source and free, paying only your AI provider's API costs.

Frequently asked questions

Is OpenClaw Easy made by Anthropic?

No. OpenClaw Easy is an unaffiliated open-source project by an independent team. It can use Claude as one of its AI providers via Anthropic's API, but Anthropic did not build it and does not endorse it. Claude Desktop is Anthropic's official product.

Can OpenClaw Easy use Claude?

Yes. Paste your Anthropic API key and OpenClaw Easy can run Claude 4.5 Sonnet, Claude 4 Opus, or whatever model your key has access to. You pay Anthropic's per-token API rates directly; OpenClaw Easy itself is free.

What does OpenClaw Easy do that Claude Desktop does not?

It runs AI inside WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord, Feishu and Line; it lets you switch between AI providers (Claude, OpenAI, Google, local); it supports cron jobs and channel-driven automation; and it can run a fully local model via Ollama for offline / private use. Claude Desktop is a single Anthropic chat window — different category.

What does Claude Desktop do that OpenClaw Easy does not?

Projects (long-running workspaces with uploaded knowledge), Artifacts (interactive code/UI panes inline with the chat), Computer Use (desktop automation via screenshots), and the official Anthropic chat UX. If you mostly do single-task focused AI sessions, Claude Desktop's experience is more polished.

Should I use both?

Many people do. Claude Desktop for focused work where you want Anthropic's UI and Computer Use. OpenClaw Easy for AI in your messaging apps — quick questions on WhatsApp, channel summaries on Slack, scheduled morning briefings on Telegram. They do not overlap much.
