Bias disclosure and sources. We make OpenClaw Easy, so this comparison is not neutral. Every Claude detail here — pricing, model lineup, features — is taken from Anthropic's public pricing page, claude.ai, and Anthropic's documentation as of June 2026. Where Claude is the better fit, we say so. If anything below is out of date, please email us.
Note — two related pages. This page compares OpenClaw Easy to Claude broadly: the Claude.ai web app, Claude Pro and Team subscriptions, and the Anthropic API. If you specifically want to compare against Anthropic's standalone Claude Desktop application for macOS/Windows, see OpenClaw Easy vs Claude Desktop instead.
OpenClaw Easy and Claude answer different questions. Claude is Anthropic's chatbot family — the Claude.ai web app, Claude Pro/Team subscriptions, and the Anthropic API that powers it all. OpenClaw Easy is a free, open-source desktop installer that runs an AI assistant on your machine and connects it to WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord, Feishu and Line. They are not the same kind of product, and for many users they are complementary — OpenClaw Easy can use Claude as its underlying model.
This guide compares them honestly on pricing, channels, model choice, privacy, and the specific question of "Should I pay for Claude Pro, or use OpenClaw Easy with my own Anthropic API key?"
The 30-second answer
- Pick OpenClaw Easy if you want Claude (or any other model) inside the messaging apps you already use — WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord. You bring an API key, OpenClaw Easy runs locally on your desktop, and Claude answers right in the chat.
- Pick Claude.ai if you want a polished standalone chat client with Anthropic's hosted features — Projects, Artifacts, Computer Use previews, web search, document upload — and you prefer a single subscription over per-token billing.
The two are not mutually exclusive. Many users keep a Claude.ai Pro subscription for deep work and run OpenClaw Easy with the Anthropic API for AI in WhatsApp and Slack.

When Claude.ai is the better choice
Claude.ai is the right tool in these cases:
- You want Anthropic's hosted features — Projects (persistent context), Artifacts (live rendered code/docs), web search, file upload, vision — without wiring them yourself.
- You prefer a flat $20/month subscription and don't want to think about per-token billing.
- You do most of your AI work in long deep-work sessions on a laptop, not in messaging apps.
- You want the polished Anthropic chat UI — thread management, model switching, mobile sync — without running anything locally.
- You need Claude Team features — shared Projects, admin controls, SSO — for a small team.
When OpenClaw Easy is the better choice
OpenClaw Easy wins in these cases:
- You want Claude inside WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack or Discord — reachable from your phone without opening claude.ai.
- You want to switch between Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and local models for different tasks instead of being locked to one provider.
- You want local-first privacy — runtime on your machine, optional Ollama for fully on-device inference.
- You want to pay per use through the Anthropic API rather than a flat subscription — light users often spend less than $20/month.
- You want it to be free and open source — auditable code on GitHub, no vendor lock-in.
Using Claude IN OpenClaw Easy
OpenClaw Easy supports Anthropic as a first-class provider. The flow takes about three minutes: install the desktop app, paste your Anthropic API key, pick a Claude model (Claude Sonnet, Claude Opus, or Claude Haiku), and connect a channel like WhatsApp (QR scan) or Telegram (bot token). From that point on, any message you send on that channel is answered by Claude. You pay Anthropic per token directly — we don't proxy, mark up, or see your traffic. This is what people mean when they say "Claude on WhatsApp" with OpenClaw Easy — see also Claude vs GPT on WhatsApp (2026) for model picking.
Privacy comparison
Claude.ai is SaaS. Your conversations, Projects, Artifacts, uploaded files and chat history live in Anthropic's cloud. Anthropic's privacy policy and enterprise controls cover what they do with that data — for most users this is fine, and Anthropic is one of the more privacy-conscious large AI vendors. But the architecture is fundamentally cloud-stored.
OpenClaw Easy is local-first. The runtime (channel adapters, message routing, agent state) lives on your machine. If you connect the Anthropic API as the model, your messages still go to Anthropic for inference — that is unavoidable for any Claude use. But everything else — chat history, channel pairings, agent configuration — stays on your device.
If you want nothing to leave your machine, OpenClaw Easy can pair with Ollama running a local Llama, Qwen or DeepSeek model. That trades Claude's quality for total on-device inference — useful for sensitive workflows where even Anthropic's API is too much. You can mix: route work conversations to Ollama and personal ones to Claude, on the same desktop install.
What about Claude Pro?
Claude Pro is Anthropic's $20/month consumer subscription. It buys more usage inside Claude.ai (higher rate limits, priority access at peak times), early access to features, and a comfortable flat-rate bill. It does not give you Claude in WhatsApp or Telegram — that requires the API.
OpenClaw Easy's equivalent is "free desktop app plus Anthropic API key" — pay-per-token. For light personal use (a few thousand messages a month, mostly Haiku or Sonnet), the API often comes out under $5–$10/month, comfortably below Claude Pro. For heavy daily use of the largest Opus models, the API can exceed $20/month quickly — in that case Claude Pro (or the API combined with prompt caching and a cheaper default model) is the better deal.
The clean way to think about it: Claude Pro buys you more Claude.ai; OpenClaw Easy + API key buys you Claude anywhere. The two answer different needs, and many users run both. See ChatGPT vs Claude for personal use (2026) for a deeper subscription comparison.
FAQ
Is OpenClaw Easy a Claude alternative?
OpenClaw Easy is not a Claude model replacement — Anthropic builds the Claude models, and OpenClaw Easy does not train its own LLM. It is an alternative to the Claude.ai web app and Claude Pro subscription if your goal is to use Claude as an AI assistant inside WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord, Feishu or Line. You bring an Anthropic API key, OpenClaw Easy runs locally on your desktop, and Claude replies inside the chat apps you already use. If your goal is the polished Claude.ai chat interface with Projects, Artifacts and Claude-hosted features, stay on Claude.ai.
Can I use Claude inside OpenClaw Easy?
Yes. OpenClaw Easy is provider-agnostic and supports Anthropic as a first-class provider. Paste your Anthropic API key in the desktop app, pick a Claude model (Claude Sonnet, Claude Opus, Claude Haiku), connect a channel like WhatsApp or Telegram, and Claude will answer messages on that channel. You pay Anthropic per token directly — OpenClaw Easy does not mark up or proxy your usage.
Which is cheaper for daily use — Claude Pro or OpenClaw Easy + Anthropic API?
It depends on volume. Claude Pro is a flat $20/month with usage limits inside Claude.ai. The Anthropic API is metered per million tokens — light personal use (a few thousand messages a month) often lands well under $20. Heavy daily use of the largest Opus models can exceed $20 quickly. For most personal or small-team assistant use cases, BYOK with the API through OpenClaw Easy is cheaper, plus you get Claude in your messaging apps instead of a separate web tab.
What's the difference between OpenClaw Easy vs Claude and OpenClaw Easy vs Claude Desktop?

The other page, OpenClaw Easy vs Claude Desktop, compares specifically to Anthropic's standalone Claude Desktop application for macOS and Windows.
